Princeton, NJ – The ECHL and Trenton Titans announced on Tuesday that the Trenton Titans have ceased operations and the team will not compete in the 2013-2014 season.

The last 14 seasons have seen numerous great players and moments, including several playoff appearances and a Kelly Cup title in 2005. Trenton also has had the privilege of working with many great NHL franchises, such as the New Jersey Devils and the current affiliate in the Philadelphia Flyers. These relationships were vital in the growth of Trenton hockey.

Most importantly the team would like to thank the fans for their support over the last 14 seasons. The Trenton organization fully intends to reimburse our loyal season ticket holders for their 2013-2014 season tickets. In the next couple of weeks there will be more information on how that process will proceed.

Again we would like to thank the fans, the community and our partners for their support. You are the reason the Trenton organization and Titans Nation were a strong and vital part of the ECHL and the New Jersey community in particular.

WHEELING, WV – Now that’s the way to finish a season and put on a show for the fans at the same time.

A .500 finish normally isn’t anything to celebrate. But after a 21-41, 52 point season last year, a 32-32-4-4 finish is a huge progressive step and proof of the fight the Trenton Titans displayed start to finish.

Down twice by two goals, the Titans fought back to send their game with Wheeling into overtime, then fended off a penalty shot before eventually taking out the Nailers in a shootout, 4-3 (1-0) before 2,850 at WesBanco Arena.

Brooks Ostergard (5-1) shook off an early goal to stop 36 and 5-of-5 in the shootout to get the win. His Wheeling counterpart Scott Darling () was just as brilliant in stopping 41, but could only kick away four during the shootout.

Wheeling (31-29-3-9=74) held that 1-0 advantage until Paul Crowder bumped it to 2-0 just 20 seconds into the second. The Nailers defense was solid in front of Darling, until the Titans power play finally got on track. After misfiring on its last 14 chances, Shane Harper continued his hot play by beating Darling inside the left post, cutting the deficit in half.

The Nailers jumped the lead back to two just four minutes later. Again, their defense clamped down and didn’t allow Trenton any offensive room for nearly 20 minutes of play. Finally, the battles in front of the net paid off at 12:41 of the third, when Kory Nagy (10) took the rebound from a Paul Cianfrini shot and launched a worm-burner from the slot under darling’s pads, making it 3-2.

The Titans grit paid off in the tying marker with 2:01 left to play, when Blake Kessel made a great individual rush up center ice and into the teeth of the Nailers’ defense. Drifting to the right circle, he got all four defenders leaning towards him, then sent a perfect pass to a streaking Jacob Cepis on the far post, who deposited his 25th which eventually sent the game into OT.

The best chance in the extra five minutes came when Keven Veilleux was awarded a penalty shot at 3:35 into OT, which was denied by Ostergard.

In the shootout, Harper roofed a sweet backhand-forehand move past Darling leading off Round Two for what would prove to be the only tally in the five rounds. Wheeling’s best chance to tie it came at the end of Round Three, when Matt Germain was able to beat Ostergard stick-side. However the shot caught the left post and bounced away. Ostergard then stopped Peter Lenes and Zack Torquato in the last two rounds to seal the win.

The win caps off a streak where the Titans won nine-of-their-last-13 and finished as one of the hottest teams in the league. Preparations are already underway for the 2013-14 season. For information on season ticket plans, contact the Titans front office at 609-341-1100 or online at TrentonTitansHockey.com.

AFTER THE WHISTLE

Trenton and Wheeling played three extra-session games, all in Wheeling. Trenton won the two shootouts, and lost the one OT game.

The Titans were 0-6 in shootouts all of last year. They finished this year 4-4.

Trenton topped its win total from last year by 11 and its point total by 20.

Harper finished the season on an eight-game point streak (11G, 8A) and scored in 11 of the 12 games in March. Cepis finished with a six game streak (7G, 11A).

ELMIRA, NY – The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell in their season finale with Atlantic Division foe Elmira, 4-1, before a crowd of 3,746 at First Arena.

The loss ended the Titans (31-32-4-4=70 points) four game win streak, as they head for their final game of the season in Wheeling, WV, tomorrow.

Elmira (39-25-3-4=85) jumped on top midway into the first, then added a power play goal early in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Despite spending more time in its defensive zone than it would have liked, Trenton stayed in the game and didn’t allow many quality chances on Scott Wedgewood (L, 47 saves, 20-22-3-2).

However two of those quality chances found the back of the net in the third, as a worm-burner from Rob Bellamy (20) and a 2-on-1 conversion by Andrew Rowe (28) put the game out of reach.

Jacob Cepis (24) ended the shutout bid of Maxime Clermont (W, 28 saves, 20-13-3-2) with 4:28 left to play. In doing so he extended his point streak to five games, while an assist by Shane Harper extended his to six games.

Even though he took the loss, Wedgewood set several marks on the night. Personally, the rookie draft pick of the New Jersey Devils had a career high in shots (51) and saves (47). He also set Trenton organization Season records for shots (1,476), saves (1,329) and minutes played (2,741), while tying the record for appearances with 48.

Trenton plays its final game of the year at Wheeling on Saturday at 7:05 pm. Game reports can be followed on Twitter (@TTitansPBP) and heard live at 107.7 FM (Trenton area), or online at 1077theBronc.com and at AmericaOne.com. The Voice of the Titans, “The Bronc” Daryle Dobos, will once again call all the action.

AFTER THE WHISTLE

Wedgewood’s rookie campaign broke or matched the following team marks: Minutes – Andrew Allen (2,722, 2004-05), Shots and Saves – Dave Caruso (1,462 and 1,327 in 2009-10) and tied Scott Stirling with his 48thappearance. Caruso currently works with Wedgewood as the Albany (AHL) Devils goaltending coach.

Last Meeting

March 24, 2013 – Trenton’s Shane Harper missed out on ECHL history with a third straight hat trick, but his four points (1G, 3A) with another four by Mike Ullrich (2G, 2 A) and five from Jacob Cepis (2G, 3A) helped pace the Titans to an 8-2 win in Elmira. Brooks Ostergard stopped 34 in the victory.

Why So Offensive?

Over the years Trenton and Elmira have produced numerous games that have gone to the wire – far more 1-and 2-goal games than not. However the last four games in the Empire State have been shootouts and blowouts. Before the last meeting, Elmira had beaten the Titans 7-1 (March 20) and 8-1 (January 27). Trenton started the run with an 8-5 win on January 15. Overall in the other 11 meetings (3 road), the average winning margin was 2 goals, with six 1-goal games (including 1 OT and 2 SO).

Elmira: 21-10-2-2 Home (7-3 in last 10). The Jackals have lost their last two and are 5-5 in their last 10 overall. Trenton: 13-17-2-2 Road (4-5-0-1 in last 10). The Titans are on a four-game win streak and are 7-3 overall in their last 10.

Series Finale

Elmira is 9-5-0-1 against Trenton, but just 4-3 at home. The Titans sport a 6-7-1-1 mark against the Jackals, with the inverse record (3-4) at First Arena. All three OT/SO this year have been played in Trenton, where Elmira went 2-0-1 (Trenton 1-1-1).

S-M-Oking

Titans new Number One line burning up the ice and burning out scoreboard lights.

The Trenton Titans have experienced a kind of scoring renaissance over the last four games, taking all four while outscoring their opponents 26-10. While several contributions have been made, the grouping of Shane Harper-Jacob Cepis-Mike Ullrich has been white hot.

Harper and Cepis – Co-Players of the Week ending March 24 – have combined for 30 points (14G, 16A). Adding one game Harper has a 5-game scoring streak (9G, 7A), while Cepis has scored in 4 straight (5G, 10A).

Almost overshadowed is Ullrich, who has a 4-game run of his own (5G, 5A) after getting one of each in a 6-4 win at Reading last night. Even more forgotten are defensemen, but Blake Kessel is THE apple picker on the blue line, with 14 A (and 2G) in 13 games this month, with 3-assist games twice in the last 3 games, while failing to score just twice in that span.

Lucky for the Eastern Conference (and bad for Trenton) the Titans are not playoff bound, because scoreboards would need some major repairs with them.

The two combined for 27 points with Cepis scoring five goals and adding nine assists and Harper tallying seven goals and six assists in four games last week.

The week opened with Harper recording an assist in a 7-1 loss at Elmira on Wednesday. Harper recorded a hat trick, including a power-play and shorthanded goal, while Cepis had three points (1g-2a) in a 5-2 win against Wheeling on Friday. In an 8-2 victory over the Nailers on Saturday, Cepis set an ECHL season-high with six points (2g-4a) while Harper notched his second straight hat trick and added a pair of assists. On Sunday, Cepis recorded five points (2g-3a) and Harper tallied four points (1g-3a) in an 8-2 win at Elmira.

Cepis leads the Titans, and is fourth in the ECHL, with 72 points (23g-49a) in 63 games. The 25-year-old has 117 points (43g-74a) in 120 career ECHL games with Trenton and Idaho.

Harper has 22 points (11g-11a) in 12 games with the Titans and has added eight points (4g-4a) in 42 games with Adirondack of the American Hockey League. The 24-year-old has 67 points (33g-34a) in 60 career ECHL games with Trenton and Greenville and 39 points (19g-20a) in 137 career games with Adirondack.

The two become the first players in the ECHL since the 2007-08 season to be named co-players of the week.

On behalf of Jacob Cepis and Shane Harper, a case of pucks will be donated to a Trenton youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 27,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.

With this award Cepis and Harper become the fourth and fifth Titans to be honored by the league. Phil DeSimone (now at Albany-AHL) on December 17-23, 2012 and Stephen Schultz (Feb 18-24) each were named Player of the Week. Marcel Noebels (now with Adirondack-AHL) was the Rookie of the Month for December

The Trenton Titans returned in the 2011-12 hockey season after a five year hiatus and boasted a 26.1% increase in attendance over the previous year, the largest of any team in the (then) 20-team ECHL. For information on team events, or to inquire about 2013-14 Season Ticket packages, call the Titans’ offices at 609-341-1100, or go to TrentonTitansHockey.com.

READING, PA – After spotting the Reading Royals in the first 15 seconds of Thursday’s final meeting of the year, one would be curious how the Titans would respond against the top team in the Eastern Conference.

What they answered with was a vengeance.

The proud ECHL affiliate of the Flyers countered with two goals in each of the first two periods, then hanging on down a frantic stretch for an entertaining 6-4 before 4,241 fans at the Sovereign Center.

Kirk McDonald scored his 16th for Reading (46-19-3-3=98 points) before the echoes of the National Anthem had faded. But if the Titans were rattled it didn’t show.

Against a lineup getting bulked up for the post season, Trenton (31-31-4-4=70) countered at 7:52 with the 16th goal of the year for Mike Ullrich, on assist from Shane Harper and Brendan Rempel. For Rempel it was his first point as a pro, while for Harper it was a continuation of a hot run for the Co-Player of the Week, which would only get hotter.

Before Harper would light things up, Kory Nagy wanted a chance first and seven minutes later he got it. With a penalty kill unit that stopped 51 straight chances against the Royals coming in, Nagy was the tip of the spear that finished off a short-handed rush for the Titans 10th SHG (8thon the road) and a 2-1 lead after one.

Harper got into the goal column at 4:15 of the second, just as a Reading penalty expired, running the lead to 3-1. It ballooned by another eight minutes later on Nagy’s (9) second of the night.

Reading appeared to have scored in the waning seconds of the period on a wraparound stopped by the left post by Scott Wedgewood (25 saves, 20-21-3-2). Several Royals celebrated, but the goal light never went on as the referee and goal judge couldn’t tell if the puck crossed the line, much to the dismay of Reading and its fans. It would prove to be a huge no-call.

Reading attacked with back-to-back goals in the first four minutes of the third, cutting the lead to 4-3. It stayed that way until 11:27 when Harper netted his second of the night (13th of the year) past a prone Riley Gill (14 saves, 10-3) to bump the lead back to two.

Things looked like they would stay that way until with Gill pulled, another Reading power play goal with 27 seconds to play gave the Royals and the remaining fans some hope.

Those prayers were nearly after a giveaway in the Titans zone with 16.8 left to play gave MacDonald a point-blank blast from the slot. Wedgewood came up with biggest play of the night, flat-out robbing MacDonald with a lightning quick glove save to preserve the lead and eventual win, which was capped off by an empty net goal by Jesse Todd.

The Titans’ Travelling Stick Show rolls on for two more road games to complete the season, as they head to Elmira Friday and Wheeling Saturday. Both games start at 7:05 pm (pregame at 6:45 pm) and can be heard at AmericaOne.com (PPV), 107.7 FM (Trenton area) and online at 1077theBronc.com. As always The Voice of the Titans, “The Bronc” Daryle Dobos, will bring you all the action.

AFTER THE WHISTLE

Jacob Cepis picked up an assist to run the Co-Player of the Week’s point streak to four (5G/10A), joining Ullrich (10 points, 5G/5A).

Harper has increased his streak to five after a two goal, one assist night. His total in that stretch jumps to 16 points (9G, 7A)

Trenton has now won 8-of-11.

The Titans have taken the season series with Reading. Trenton finished 8-6-0-1 after winning six of the last 8 against the Reading. The Royals end with a 7-5-3 mark against Trenton.

ELMIRA, NY – The Trenton Titans continued to light up the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon, as the proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers built a snowman on the First Arena scoreboard with an 8-2 win over the Jackals (38-24-3-4=83 points).

Including a sweep (5-2 and 7-1) of Wheeling this weekend, the Titans have posted 20 goals in the last three games. The win also was a bit of revenge for the team and winning goalie Brooks Ostergard (34 saves, 4-1), after a 7-2 defeat for both last Wednesday in Elmira.

Trenton (30-31-4-4=68 points) controlled most of the play in the first, taking a 1-0 into the break when Jacob Cepis finished off a wraparound to beat Maxime Clermont (28 saves, 19-13-3-2) midway through the period.

The lead quickly went to two after Mike Ullrich ripped a drop pass from Cepis into the net 46 seconds into the second period. Matt Tassone (2) finished a 2-on-1 to cut the lead in half at 8:06.

However that was as close as Elmira got all night, as Jesse Todd scored 20 seconds after Tassone, bumping the lead back to 3-1. Trenton added two more as Shane Harper (11) and the second of the night for Ullrich (15) made it 5-1, all but finishing the competitive portion of the game.

Elmira’s Chaz Johnson (12) finished off a carry-over power play 12 seconds into the third to give some hope to the Jackals’ fans. However the only drama would be with Harper.

The third year pro from Valencia, CA, had a chance at ECHL history if he could get a hat trick for a third straight game. Despite a couple great early chances, he would fall short. Still, he ended the game with that one goal and three assists. Over the last four games this week he totaled seven goals and six assists.

Cepis would be right with Harper all weekend as well. His goal (23) after Johnson’s finished his night’s scoring with two goals and three assists. For the last three games he notched 14 points of his own (5G, 9 A).

Todd would score his second of the game at 13:53. Then, on a play predicted to Alexandre Carrier by teammate Derrick Palis, Carrier fought in the crease after a Kory Nagy offensive draw led to a Pallis one-timer from the point. The ensuing scrum in front ended with the first professional goal for Carrier (in his 44th game) in the final minute to complete the scoring.

The Titans will get a couple days off before the Travelling Stick Show finishes the season with a three-game road trip through the Atlantic Division. Trenton goes to Reading (March 28), Elmira (March 29) and Wheeling (March 30) for 7:05 pm starts. The Voice of the Titans, “The Bronc” Daryle Dobos, will call all the action, starting with the pregame at 6:45 pm, on AmericaOne.com, 107.7 FM (Trenton) and 1077theBronc.com.

AFTER THE WHISTLE

Carrier’s first professional point also came in Elmira, as he grabbed an assist in an 8-5 win on January 18.

Ostergard’s four wins with Trenton have come on Sundays.

Overshadowed in the Harper/Cepis onslaught is the scoring of Ullrich, who had four goals and four assists over the last three games, running mainly on the same line as Cepis and Harper.

Trenton has won seven of its last 10, including a 2-2 mark against Elmira.
